Fifteen teenagers have arrived and will be at the Home until they return to school late in January. Yes, almost three months off.
These are the fortunate children as some were street kids and others orphans. But Mama Arlene began Urukundo Home in 2006 for just these children. Now 5 years later there are many successes. Yes God surely found a home for them, a safe home, a Christian home.
But with three months off these kids do keep busy. On Saturday morning several are up at 7:00am making Chapati, a fried bread like a tortilla. Monique in the kitchen prepares the dough and the kids roll them out. Then they are fried. They are a wonderful change from potatoes, rice and beans for breakfast.
Other kids do their own laundry and clean out the dorms later in the morning. They also help serve the meals and wash the dishes in basins outside. It is a family so they all pitch in.
But they are still like most teenagers on their computers, on Facebook, listening to music and watching Glee.
These computers were donated by an organization providing one computer per child.
